BuzzFeed News — Lead Editor, News Curation

I have been the lead editor of the BuzzFeed News curation team since March 2021. In this role I co-lead the team alongside our director, handling day-to-day management and making sure we’re on top of what is coming down the pipeline. The team handles publishing on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, BFN homepage curation, push notifications, and pitching to distributed platforms.

We also collaborate with desk editors on story drafts before publishing, working on headlines, SEO, and more. I coach my reports through the story promotion plan process and give a first edit to tweet threads and push alerts. I also assist with tentpole projects or experiments where we test out new strategies on social platforms.

Here are some highlights from my own promo plan work. These all link to tweet threads that I wrote, but for most of these stories I also wrote push notification options, headline options, Instagram caption, and more. I served as the point person for these stories and worked with reporters, editors, copy desk, etc. to coordinate a seamless rollout for these important pieces of journalism.

BuzzFeed Shopping — Lead Social Media Strategist

I led BuzzFeed’s commerce social strategy team from December 2019 to March 2021. This was a high-level management role where I reported directly to BuzzFeed’s director of social publishing. I worked closely with stakeholders on the affiliate business team, the editorial team, other facets of social publishing and more (merch, newsletter, product, strategist partnerships, talent, etc.)

Some highlights

+ Team growth + development

My role had previously been held by only one strategist, and I built out an entirely new team org, job descriptions and structure. By the time I departed the role, the team had grown to 6+ strategists to support the lofty publishing goals of BuzzFeed Shopping. We built out the first ever publishing bibles to outline how we distributed affiliate content across platforms.

+ Launching IG accounts

I led the concept, design and launch for BuzzFeed Shopping + BuzzFeed Pets and coached my reports on the best ways to strategize and manage the pages. Both accounts cracked 10k followers within the first month of launch with organic-only support. They continued to steadily grow and reached the quarterly goals we set for growth — shopping hit 60k followers and pets hit 55k followers during my tenure.

+ New platforms

I pushed the team to explore new platforms such as TikTok, Reels and SMS texting. I pitched a partnership with a company called Subtext and ended up launching a Q4 campaign where I texted subscribers daily deals and items. The testing period yielded promising data and I encouraged the team to continue using it in the future upon my departure. Under my supervision, we also published some of our first-ever affiliate short-form videos. I built out an entire protocol and best practices on how BuzzFeed creates and publishes this type of content.

+ Meeting goals

All of my team growth and work ultimately supported BuzzFeed's lofty monthly + quarterly revenue goals — which we continued to meet (and sometimes exceeded!) even in the face of COVID and the ever-changing e-commerce environment. I was part of the team that helped deliver a 68% increase in gross sales for BuzzFeed’s 2020 Prime Day coverage. My team increased our Prime Day 2020 organic FB views by 20.3% from the previous year.

Byline contributions

HuffPost — Audience Editor

I worked on HuffPost’s main audience team to coordinate social distribution and SEO efforts across platforms. I helped manage HuffPost's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram presence across many pages, as well as curated third party platforms like Apple News and Reddit.

Some highlights

+ Here To Make Friends insta story

I worked with HuffPost's podcast, Here To Make Friends, on social promotion for its live shows. I photographed and filmed all the assets used in the story and created the story by myself. The story from a Brooklyn show at the Bell House had the highest completion rate of all of HuffPost’s Instagram stories for the month of July.

+ Trump fact check Twitter thread

I wrote and designed this Twitter thread for a Trump address on the border wall. I pulled relevant content to fact check Trump's statements and I designed the graphics using a template from our multimedia team. It was cited in a Twitter article on best practices.

+ Apple News open rates

I helped head up HuffPost’s Apple News push notification presence. After my team took it over in August 2018, we grew our open rate by a full percentage point by increasing the cadence of alerts and diversifying the content we pushed.

+ Facebook post from USWNT

I was staffed during the USWNT final, and pitched this article. I helped round up the tweets in the piece and was given a co-byline. I shared on social and this post alone got more than 30,000 clicks and 66,000 interactions.

Some highlights

+ Front page article

I wrote and reported the front page article of the New York Post on August 22, 2016: Basilica of St. Pat’s offers final resting place in crypt for $7M.

+ Divorce records spread

I spent time at Manhattan Supreme Court going through divorce records from the early 1900s that became unsealed after 100 years. It was featured as a two-page spread in the NYP print edition: The sexy secrets from NYC’s long-sealed divorce records.
